Blog Entry #1-Intelligence Behind the Lenses
The smartest character in Lord of the Flies is Piggy. Piggy’s glasses symbolize his intelligence and the intelligence in the world. In the beginning of the book, the boys use his glasses to make a fire. Later Jack’s group steals Piggy’s glasses, but symbolically they end up stealing more than Piggy’s glasses from their group. Yes, they steal the only way for Ralph’s group to make a fire, but they also steal the intelligence from their group.
Another huge symbol that involves Piggy is his death. Piggy is killed when Ralph accidentally rolls a boulder on him--which also crushes the conch shell. The conch shell is a symbol for a calm and civilized society. The conch shell starts to lose its power when Jack begins to gain more power with savageness. The death of both Piggy and the conch represent the official end of a civilized society.

Blog Entry #2-Jack Brings out Everyone's True Colors
Ever since Jack was first introduced in Lord of the Flies, he has had a bad attitude. The first time we see his cruel personality is when he loses in the election for leadership against Ralph. After that, Jack is constantly getting on Ralph’s bad side, and he also becomes obsessed with hunting.
Once Jack became obsessed with hunting, his brutal side starts to show. Through the character of Jack, William Golding shows that all human beings are born evil, and according to Golding all humans are capable of acting like Jack. Jack is able to possess the rest of the group to leave Ralph and join his side to hunt and kill.
The true symbol of “savageness” is shown when Jack puts a bloody pig’s head on a stick. Simon thinks that the pig head talks to him and tells him that every human is evil.
Throughout the book Jack becomes more and more evil until he and his group kill everyone. Golding shows that every human being is initially evil.

Blog Entry #3-Evil is Good...for an Interesting Story
When I first started reading Lord of the Flies, I found it to be a little hard to get through. It was easy to pay attention when the book had dialogue, but when Golding wrote long paragraphs of description I found myself becoming distracted.
The book started to pick up pace after Jack started hunting for pigs and when he put the pig head of the stick. The book became very interesting, and I could not put it down.
Golding wrote a very engaging novel about how humans are born evil. His use of symbolism was very amusing, and it added deeper meaning to the book. Golding took Thomas Hobbes’ theory that “humans are inherently evil” and wrote a unique novel to show it. After reading this book I view the human species different.
